Why Milliseconds Matter: 3 Reasons to Use a Forex VPS

There is a saying that goes, “Blink and you may miss it”. Well, with Forex trading, there is maybe no truer saying. In an industry that transacts more than five trillion dollars a day and with more and more being driven by algorithmic (“algo”) traders, it is becoming increasingly harder for the individual trader to keep up. One of the solutions for forex traders is the VPS, or virtual private server. In this post, we will look at three reasons why serious traders should use a VPS.

  1. Speed

Traders can be located in any corner of the globe. While financial centres like London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Sydney, and New York still dominate, it’s increasingly common for traders to be on the top of a mountain in India or on a beach in Thailand. The advent of mobile trading systems and free WiFi makes this logistically very easy, but what most traders don’t realize is that the time their orders take to get to their broker’s main trader servers in London or New York can be anywhere up to 500 milliseconds. When a trade server is executing trades in less than one millisecond, that’s 500 times the delay added by a slow internet connection. Hosting a forex trading platform on a VPS means that the delay between a forex trading platform and the main trade server can be reduced to one to two milliseconds. With a VPS, traders won’t have to worry about missing the next move after non-farm payrolls.

  1. EAs

Ever-increasing volumes of forex trades are being executed by robots. One such popular variety of robot is an EA, or expert advisor. An EA is an automated trading product available on the ever-popular MetaTrader 4 platform from MetaQuotes and sold in app stores. EAs can run 24/7 and greatly increase the opportunities a trader has to trade the forex market, which is open 24 hours a day. The downside of an EA is, it requires a trader to leave his or her MetaTrader 4 platform running 24 hours a day. This can be a problem if the trader is using a laptop that doesn’t have a reliable battery or WiFi connection or if the trader has to switch PCs between home and office. Running the MetaTrader 4 platform from a VPS provides a reliable, always-on server with 24/7 IT support, ensuring that a trader’s EA never misses a trade.

  1. Reliability

When a trader’s real money is at stake, it’s a serious matter if problems like power failure, internet failure, slow computers, or even a complete computer failure affect a trader’s ability to execute trades exactly when he or she needs to. A VPS is a great way for a trader to reduce these risks, because the VPS is hosted in a secure data centre, usually Equinix NY4 or Equinix LD4. These data centres provide security systems to prevent hacking, as well as backup servers and backup power generation. It also means all the setup and processing power of the forex trading platform is done on the faster, more reliable VPS, and a trader only needs to access this server using any remote viewing software. This makes switching PCs easy and makes access available from any internet-connected device.
